bonsai vases

My lifelong fascination with and study of trees has taken me through most every art media I've explored, in almost 40 years as an artist. Whether I've drawn, photographed, sculpted the wood itself, or simply hiked among a forest of giants, my art has always returned to this most noble of subjects.

My recent work has focused primarily on Bonsai, or Bonsai-like trees, interpreted in stoneware or porcelain clay. Each piece is completely unique, as individual as any tree, yet they all begin as a vase form. Although some remain functional in a broad sense, most of these pieces will have much of the front face of the vase removed, revealing the interior back wall of glaze. Most people imagine this to resemble sky or even a waterfall.

Several of my most recent pieces have all of the negative space removed, transforming them to pure sculpture. These technically demanding works become little more than ground, trunk, and a delicate latticework of branches and foliage.

The pieces are constructed with traditional handbuilt slabs, but my forming techniques resemble those a metalsmith or fine woodworker might use. Once the pieces have gone through two kiln firings, my finishing techniques also depart from convention. My materials may include fused colored glass, stains, paint, patinas and more - all in pursuit of a refined, naturalistic result.  Enjoy!
